The Ramayana of Válmíki, the ádi-kávya or first poem of Sanskrit literature, tells of prince Ráma of Ayodhyá: his exile to the forest, the abduction of Sítá by the demon-king Rávana, the alliance with Hanumán and the Vánar host, the great war on Lanká, and Ráma's return and coronation. This edition presents the complete epic — Bála, Ayodhyá, Áranya, Kishkindhá, Sundara, Yuddha, and Uttara kándas, 642 sargas — with every Sanskrit shloka followed by its English translation.

The translation is by Manmatha Nath Dutt (1891-1894), the Calcutta scholar whose literal, verse-numbered prose remains the most complete shloka-wise English rendering of the epic in the public domain.
