The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius (1941) is Orwell's long essay on English national character, written while bombs fell on London. In three parts — 'England Your England,' 'Shopkeepers at War,' and 'The English Revolution' — Orwell argues that England's distinctive culture of decency and liberty can be preserved only through a socialist transformation. It is Orwell at his most passionate and patriotic.
