The Lady in the Lake (1943) is Chandler's fourth Marlowe novel. Derace Kingsley hires Marlowe to find his estranged wife, who disappeared from their cabin near a mountain lake. What begins as a simple missing-persons case spirals into a tale of switched identities, multiple murders, and a corpse at the bottom of a pristine lake. Chandler masterfully interweaves two seemingly unrelated cases into a single devastating conclusion.
