Playback (1958) is Chandler's seventh and final completed Philip Marlowe novel. Hired to follow a woman from the train station to wherever she goes, Marlowe trails her to a seaside hotel in the fictional town of Esmeralda, where she is hiding from a past that refuses to stay buried. Originally conceived as a screenplay, the novel has a lean, cinematic quality distinct from the denser LA novels.
