The Mirror of Kong Ho, published in 1905, is Ernest Bramah's epistolary novel in which a cultured Chinese gentleman records his observations of English life for the benefit of his family at home. Through Kong Ho's earnest attempts to understand everything from parliamentary democracy to the English obsession with weather, Bramah turns the conventions of Edwardian society inside out. Written in the same elaborate, mock-formal prose as the Kai Lung stories, the novel is both a comic masterpiece and a surprisingly sharp piece of social criticism.
