The Glass Key (1931) is Hammett's most tightly plotted novel. Political fixer Ned Beaumont finds himself caught between loyalty to his boss Paul Madvig and the mounting evidence that Madvig may have committed murder. Set against a backdrop of machine politics, bootlegging, and bare-knuckle power plays, it is Hammett's most morally complex work — André Gide called it his masterpiece.
