Prison Diary with Letters

Arrested on 14 April 1930 for defying the salt laws, Jawaharlal Nehru began this diary inside Naini Central Prison and kept it until his release on 11 October. Daily observation gives way to long letters to his father, family, and Gandhi, recording the civil-disobedience movement as it reached him through prison walls. The book also preserves jointly signed political memoranda, Nehru’s hand-drawn plan of his barrack, his exact daily schedule, and a forty-two-item register of books read.
